Man Utd have effectively ruled out making a move for Nottingham Forest defender Murillo during the January transfer window, according to reports.

Tribal Football claim that the Red Devils are showing interest in the Brazilian, along with Chelsea and Liverpool.

However, Michael Carrick’s side have no plans to add significant defensive reinforcements midway through the season.

Murillo is seen as a long-term target, but the fee required to bring him to Old Trafford in January would be prohibitive.

How much would Man Utd need to pay?

It is believed that Nottingham Forest would have offloaded Murillo in the summer for £60m to £70m if they had been relegated from the Premier League.

However, after maintaining their top-flight status, there was no need to sell the centre-half, and Tribal Football report it would now take a “huge offer” for them to consider letting him leave.

Competition for Murillo’s signature from other teams also means that there is no pressure to sanction his sale for a low price.

Murillo is not the only centre-back on the club’s radar

The 24-year-old is thought to be one of several players that United are looking at to reinforce the middle of defence. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has been on the recruitment team’s shortlist for several years, and he continues to be a player of interest.

During the summer transfer window, there were also links to Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, prior to the Netherlands international signing a new five-year contract back in August.

From the sound of things, the club may make a concerted effort to strengthen the backline at the end of the season. However, considering how poorly Carrick’s team have been defensively, many fans would be hoping for new additions as soon as the next transfer window opens.
