Everton’s plans for the January transfer window are developing rapidly, with several targets already identified, including a very exciting centre-back.
Despite clear weakness in depth, Everton have a young squad with plenty to like right now. Jarrad Branthwaite could be world-class if he keeps fit and develops as he has over the past couple of seasons.
But long-term, he doesn’t have a partner with James Tarkowski past his prime despite the continued quality he shows for Everton. Now, one target linked to Everton could be the perfect long-term partner, but a move will need to be made quickly.

Everton target Aaron Bouwman is also wanted by Chelsea and Newcastle
This week has seen Everton linked with a move for Aaron Bouwman, the 19-year-old currently playing senior football for Ajax and attracting plenty of interest.
It would be a brilliant signing for the Toffees, but according to Chronicle Live, Everton face competition from big spenders Chelsea and Newcastle for his signature, but the Ajax demand is said to only be around £6.7m right now.
Bouwman is a 6ft 6in defender who shares plenty of qualities with Branthwaite, meaning the two could form a devastating combination that could last a long time for Everton.
Bouwman and Branthwaite could be excellent together
Everton should be planning long-term to give Branthwaite a partner who is equally as high-potential and talented. Bouwman would be exactly that.
Bouwman Department Branthwaite
6ft 6in Height 6ft 4in
95.2% Pass completion rate 84.6%
30 Recoveries 14
59% Duel winning % 63.6%
60% Aerial duel winning % 68.4%
A look into their respective forms this season showcases how Bouwman is at his best on the ball, while his duel percentages are solid for his age and lack of experience.
By investing in Bouwman early, Everton would be backing his potential, and this is a brilliant idea because he has so much talent and through the Ajax school of playing he might be the next Matthijs de Ligt.
Bouwman learning under Branthwaite and Tarkowski for a season or two would allow him to learn how to play in the Premier League, and he could then be the right centre-back next to Branthwaite for years.
Do it now, Everton. Before Chelsea or Newcastle snap him up, and he becomes a £40m defender pretty much instantly. The pitch would be simple: come and play at the Hill Dickinson, or likely get loaned or sit in the reserves as one of those other clubs.
Bouwman and Branthwaite could define an era at Everton.
