Manchester City were linked with a move for Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window after losing Rodri to Barcelona.
An offer failed to materialize as the Cityzens ended up splashing out on Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea instead.
According to Catalunya Radio, City’s interest in De Jong was real and they even made contact with Barca to discuss the possibility of a transfer.
Barcelona were “open” to negotiations for the Dutchman which then led to the Premier League side asking for reports on De Jong’s knee injury.
The midfielder returned from World Cup 2026 with a knee injury that has seen him miss the start of the 2026-27 season with Barcelona.
After receiving the reports, City subsequently told Barca they would not be making an offer for the Netherlands international and moved on to other targets.
De Jong has still yet to feature for Barcelona this season but is on the comeback trail. He returned to full training this week and will hopefully be available for selection in the coming weeks.
