Eagles Offense Hit With Fresh Injury Scare as Key Stars Miss Practice 1
As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to head to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, their latest injury report offers little reason for optimism.
The outlook is looking far more discouraging than encouraging after both running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith sat out Wednesday’s practice.
Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith miss Wednesday practice
Barkley, 29, injured his right hamstring on a six-yard run in the first quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 24-20 loss to the Rams. He finished the game with just two carries for eight yards and a short 2-yard catch.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the injury is “not considered to be a major” issue and the Eagles don’t view it as a long-term problem. However, he expected Barkley to miss some time, including Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

Head coach Nick Sirianni gave no definitive timeline on Monday but claimed he “will have more answers Wednesday.” Finally, Wednesday’s practice report came, and it is in no way a good sign, as both he and Smith missed the session, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Smith, 27, has dealt with his hamstring injury for longer. He played through the pain in the Week 3 loss at Chicago, but sat out entirely against the Rams in Week 4 after missing a full week of drills. Looking ahead to the Week 5 matchup in London, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Smith is “at very best, questionable” and noted the setback “could be a multi-game absence.”
Quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled against the Rams without DeVonta Smith. He threw for just 93 yards on 12-of-27 completions, though he did manage two touchdowns while taking four sacks. They looked even more miserable the week before against Chicago.
The backfield is also thin. Tank Bigsby took over after Saquon Barkley left the game, but he later exited with a muscle injury that required surgery. Will Shipley is now the team’s only healthy option, and Hurts will have to carry a big share of the running game.
