Liverpool academy chief Alex Inglethorpe has admitted that Jarell Quansah proved him wrong when making his way through the ranks to the senior team.
It follows an impressive rise to the top, with the defender making a name for himself with the Reds, before a switch to Bayer Leverkusen last summer that has taken him on to the next level. Quansah has since become a regular option for Thomas Tuchel with the England national team, with his ability to feature as both a centre-back and as a right-back clearly desired by the head coach during his stint as manager.
It's no surprise that in the time since, transfer links have emerged linking the academy graduate with some top clubs. Liverpool has a buyback clause that can be activated by next June, while the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Real Madrid have seemingly been monitoring his progress.
It remains to be seen what may happen with the 23-year-old, who is seemingly proving himself at the top level, but it wasn't a level that everyone could immediately foresee him reaching.
That's certainly the case for academy director Inglethorpe, who has been pleasantly surprised by his progress, while explaining how difficult it is to judge young talent at different stages in their career.
Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: "At that stage [early academy], there's too many unknowns. You can't predict how players will react to adversity and natural bumps in the road.

"I've been proven wrong so many times in the past. A good example would be Jarell [Quansah] - someone who was always liked and never in danger of leaving but probably never seen in the top three in the group."
It underlines how non-linear some soccer careers can be, with progress often coming at different stages, which can lead to players living out very different scenarios to what was projected.
Even when Quansah left Liverpool last summer, where he was largely a rotation option, not many would have predicted that he would be a starting defender for the England national team at a World Cup, but he has risen to each challenge and passed them with flying colors.
That then leads to the sense that there is no surprise that transfer links are emerging once again, with a return to Anfield potentially on the cards next summer.
Considering the difficulties that the Reds have had in the backline with depth and quality, it would be a deal that makes some sense, but plenty could change in the months ahead.
Before then, Quansah will be looking to continue proving people wrong until he can push on and truly be among the best defenders out there.
