Seamus Coleman left Everton after 17 years at the end of last season, and a new claim from Evan Ferguson will leave very few people surprised.

After much consideration, the 37-year-old called time on his spell with the Toffees, letting his contract expire.

The club are yet to organise a testimonial, but that will surely happen at some point, so that a legend in every sense of the word can properly feel the adoration of the supporters.

Seamus Coleman was a top right-back in his prime, arguably one of the very best in the Premier League. His swashbuckling style really set him apart, as did his incredible work ethic.

Sadly, injuries really took their toll towards the end of his stint, but Coleman was still always a vital asset for Everton in terms of the leadership he brought, and an admission by striker Evan Ferguson epitomises that.

Evan Ferguson shares brilliant Seamus Coleman speech tale

Ferguson knew Coleman from their time in the Republic of Ireland squad together.

Brighton have put out a new video on their TikTok channel, where their players are asked for the best team talks they have ever received.

Ferguson recalled a time when Coleman spoke like a manager while on duty with Ireland. He said: “Seamus Coleman. He’s a very good speaker. He’s had a few but I remember one in particular that probably sticks to me and stands to me, you know?

“I can still be in the moment now. He’s very passionate. I think everyone who knows him knows what type of man he is. So I’d say Seamus Coleman.”

While Coleman didn’t play much for Everton in the last few years before his departure, he was clearly still a tremendous asset with his ability to lead, and be accountable for things. His humility made everyone around him respect him and undoubtedly, the dressing room is now worse off for no longer having him.

It is truly a shame he moved on, but at the same time he absolutely earned the right to make that call.

David Moyes was keen to keep Coleman around in a coaching capacity, but did also say that he wasn’t really looking to get into that just yet, which again is fair enough.

He has not yet found a new club to play for. Coleman did say he spoke with Sheffield United recently but decided it was too soon to join a new team after leaving Everton.

It remains to be seen where he’ll head next. But whoever gets him will be extremely lucky.
