Amid claims that Jarell Quansah could seal a possible return to Liverpool in 2027, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has provided a further update.

The 23-year-old joined Bayer Leverkusen from the Reds last year, becoming an important part of their plans and retaining his place in England’s squad.

This week, a surprise return to Liverpool has been mooted as a reward for Quansah’s good form, with the Reds reportedly keeping tabs on his situation at Leverkusen.

He has a clause in his Leverkusen contract that allows them to re-sign him for £59.5m by June 15th, 2027, should they see him as a strong option to bring in at the end of the season.

Writing on X, Plettenberg claimed that Quansah could depart his current club in 2027, with Liverpool joining Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal in showing an interest in him:

“Jarell Quansah could leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen in summer 2027. Movement already happening behind the scenes. Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested. Real Madrid are regularly scouting him. Liverpool still have a buy-back option: €70m valid until June 15, 2027.”

Should Liverpool steer clear of Jarell Quansah reunion?

Opinion is likely to be split when it comes to Liverpool bringing Quansah back to Anfield, with the Englishman about being flattered by comparisons with Reds legend and captain Virgil van Dijk in the past:

“A massive compliment. I think what he (Van Dijk) has been doing over the past five or 10 years has been unrivalled, especially in the Premier League. He’s had flawless seasons, he’s been a vital part of what Liverpool’s identity has been. So to play next to him is so good and I can learn so much from him.

“There’s times where he’s constructive and just says it how it is and tells me what I need to improve on, and there’s times where, especially on the pitch because the crowd’s loud, he needs to shout and make examples in different ways.”

While Quansah has continued to impress for club and country since leaving Liverpool, the Reds need to have reservations about a reunion with him, considering they decided to sell him for a reason.

When Van Dijk leaves – hopefully not for another few years – they need to sign an elite option who can be an experienced head at the back alongside young pair Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, even though both already possess plenty of leadership.

Quansah is still relatively young himself, and is arguably only at a squad player level for Liverpool, rather than being a definite in the starting lineup week in, week out.

The Reds would be wise to keep watching his development as this season goes on, and if he excels and becomes a genuine key man under Thomas Tuchel with England, they may feel he is worth spending £59.5m on next summer.

Seeing him join a direct rival such as Chelsea or Arsenal instead of signing him could ultimately backfire, but as things stand, it makes sense to look at different options instead of bringing back a former player so soon.
