Sean Payton confirms play-calling rumors as Broncos make major offensive change

Sean Payton confirms play-calling rumors as Broncos make major offensive change image

After the Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, there was some buzz going around about how the Denver Broncos might be making a switch at play caller.

Thursday morning saw national reporters add fuel to the fire, reporting that the Broncos would be turning towards a more collaborative offensive approach between Sean Payton and offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

But Thursday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter shared that Payton has a clearer story for these play-calling rumors. Payton not only confirmed the rumors were true, but made it clear he's taking over the play-calling duties this season starting in Week 5.

Sean Payton confirms he's taking over play-calling duties for Broncos' offense

"We'll make a change offensively. I'll call the plays," Payton told reporters on Thursday ahead of their Week 5 matchup.

Payton confirmed that he is, in fact, taking play-calling duties from Webb after just four weeks. It was a bold change for Payton to make, but now, the Broncos are making a pivot back to Payton after a sluggish start to the season.

With the 0-4 Los Angeles Chargers on tap in Week 5, this is a good time to make a change. Bo Nix has struggled to get the ball to his receivers this year, and the run game has been very underwhelming.

While they've faced a gauntlet of defenses, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers, this offense should still be playing better than it has.

Payton is hoping that, by taking over as the play-caller, he will be able to help fix some of the offensive issues this team has shown early this season.

It's going to be very interesting to see how Payton and the Broncos offense perform against a struggling Chargers team in Week 5.

If things go well and the Broncos look good, then it might be smooth sailing from here on out. But if the Broncos struggle, it might be more of a question of the offensive personnel on the field, and not so much the play-callers.
