Odell Beckham Jr. Reveals How Kevin O'Connell Recruited Him After Giants Release 1

Odell Beckham Jr. faced more uncertainty after his short return to the New York Giants ended with his release after only three games. Then a call from Minnesota gave the veteran wide receiver a new opportunity.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell made a personal pitch instead of offering Beckham a roster spot. His message convinced OBJ to join Minnesota as the team continued its strong season. Beckham has now shared what O’Connell told him during the call that changed his plans.

Beckham’s second Giants stint ended after three games, one target and no receptions. New York drafted him 12th overall in 2014, and he spent his first five NFL seasons with the franchise. The 33-year-old receiver then moved toward Minnesota after the Vikings opened space for veteran help on their practice squad. The move gave him a fresh chance after a difficult exit.

“It seemed as if he wanted me to be here. And that was expressed to me. And that feels good. It always feels better when you’re doing it for somebody who, you know, you feel like their heart is there for it as well. So that was really kind of it,” Beckham said.

Minnesota entered the move at 4-0, but its receiver room needed protection. Justin Jefferson was dealing with an ankle sprain, and Jordan Addison had a hamstring issue. O’Connell also knew Beckham from their time with the Los Angeles Rams, including the team’s Super Bowl LVI season. The practice-squad deal does not place Beckham on the 53-man roster, but Minnesota can elevate him for a game. The Vikings face the New Orleans Saints next, giving Beckham a target.

Kevin O’Connell’s personal recruiting call secures OBJ in Minnesota

New York’s abrupt exit left Beckham searching for his next chapter. Minnesota offered an immediate fit as mounting injuries to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison stretched the team’s receiver depth thin. The Vikings’ 4-0 record gave Beckham a chance to join a team with postseason goals. Minnesota’s practice-squad move outlines the roster need behind the decision.

The key moment came through O’Connell’s personal call. “BREAKING: Odell Beckham Jr. is signing with the #Vikings, per sources,” the report stated. Beckham’s account added the human reason: he felt O’Connell genuinely wanted him there. Their Rams history gave the conversation credibility, and the coach’s direct approach helped Minnesota win the decision. Jefferson and Addison’s timeline made the backfield addition an urgent priority for Minnesota.

Beckham must earn an active role, but his experience now gives O’Connell another option before the Saints game.
