Could Denzel Boston Be the Biggest Reason Behind the Browns' Surprising Offensive Success? 1
The Cleveland Browns did not enter the 2026 season with many people expecting their offense to become one of the early surprises around the NFL. Four games in, that is exactly what has happened.
The Browns are 3-1 after winning three straight games, and rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston has played a major role in the turnaround. The second-round pick has quickly become one of Deshaun Watson’s most dangerous options, giving the Browns a downfield threat they have not consistently had in recent seasons. Bill Barnwell believes Boston’s impact goes beyond a few highlight plays.

Barnwell pointed to Boston’s ability to make plays downfield while still converting a large percentage of the passes coming his way. In a league where defenses are constantly searching for ways to limit explosive plays, that combination has made the rookie especially valuable.
“In a league where teams are desperate for deep threats, Boston ranks fourth in air yards per target (16.9) while bringing in nearly 60% of the passes thrown in his direction.
He’s already enough of a downfield burner to give opposing defenses serious pause, and Boston has been one of the biggest reasons the Browns have been surprisingly effective on offense this season.”

The numbers back up that assessment. Boston leads all rookies with 284 receiving yards through four games and is averaging 21.8 yards per catch. He has also scored twice, including a 46-yard touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in his NFL debut and a 55-yard touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following week.
His biggest play of the Browns’ Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers came on a different kind of deep shot. Boston got behind the Steelers’ secondary for a 60-yard reception in the second quarter, setting up a touchdown and helping the Browns eventually escape with a 27-24 victory.
The production has also given Watson a target capable of changing a game without needing double-digit catches. Watson has clearly noticed the difference. Speaking about Boston’s development, the Browns quarterback pointed to the growing trust between the two players and Boston’s ability to make the most of his chances.
That chemistry has become particularly important as the Browns try to build around Watson. The Browns also have first-round rookie KC Concepcion, who has emerged as another reliable option, while tight end Harold Fannin Jr. remains heavily involved. Boston, however, brings something different. At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, he combines size with the speed to threaten defenses vertically.
His impact was already drawing attention around the league after the Steelers game. DK Metcalf, a receiver Boston looked up to, approached him afterward and told him he was a fan of his game. Boston has remained focused despite the attention.
The Browns still have plenty to prove. Three of its wins have come by a combined 10 points, and the Browns are preparing for another road test against the Jets on October 11.
