The Dallas Cowboys suffered a frustrating 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, but the biggest pregame shock occurred long before kickoff. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr., set to make his home debut at AT&T Stadium after joining the team in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was unexpectedly scratched just minutes before inactives were announced.

Porter arrived at the venue intending to suit up, but his physical condition rapidly worsened inside the training room. Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed the unusual situation during his postgame press conference, detailing how quickly the circumstances spiraled.

“Unique thing, came to the stadium and he wasn't feeling very well,” Schottenheimer said. “The trainers came to us, said it got significantly worse after they treated him. He just wasn't feeling good. And the decision was made that he wasn't going to be able to play as he was very, very sick.”

The sudden void in the secondary proved costly for Dallas as Tampa Bay’s offense found rhythm early. Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving spearheaded the attack, shredding the defense for 165 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels managed the game effectively, throwing for 189 yards and a touchdown score.

Dallas generated sparks on offense through quarterback Dak Prescott, who threw for 316 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Wide receiver George Pickens delivered a big performance with nine receptions for 130 yards and a score, while receiver Ryan Flournoy provided a secondary spark with 90 yards on three catches. However, three costly turnovers and defensive missteps doomed the Cowboys down the stretch.

Sitting at a crossroads after the Week 5 setback, Dallas now enters a key mini-bye week before traveling to face the Green Bay Packers. Getting Porter healthy and fully integrated into the defense will be essential as the Cowboys look to bounce back.
