Everton owners explore potential sale less than two years after takeover

The Friedkin Group has confirmed it is exploring new investment options for Everton, including the possible sale of a controlling stake, less than two years after taking charge.

In a statement released on Friday morning, the group said the financial stability established since its arrival meant the time was right to consider the club’s next chapter. Moelis & Company has been retained to advise on the process.

The announcement opens the door to another change of ownership, although it does not confirm that a full sale will take place. No prospective investors or timetable were identified.

TFG completed its takeover in December 2024, bringing an end to a prolonged period of uncertainty. Its statement pointed to the work undertaken to stabilise Everton’s finances and help bring the new stadium to completion.

Those contributions deserve recognition. Everton needed security after years in which concerns about the club’s future extended well beyond results on a Saturday afternoon.

However, supporters are also entitled to question the gap between the owners’ assurances and the support available to David Moyes.

TFG has pledged to continue backing the club throughout the investment process. That commitment follows a summer transfer window which left significant frustration.

As reported by the BBC, Everton accepted a £40m offer from Nottingham Forest for Harrison Armstrong before ultimately withdrawing from the deal. Beto’s subsequent departure for Fiorentina left Thierno Barry as the squad’s only recognised senior striker.

Moyes also revealed in September that he had neither met nor spoken to Dan Friedkin since returning as manager in January 2025.

Against that backdrop, another promise of support will invite scrutiny. Financial stability matters, but so do sufficient options on the pitch and a working relationship between the manager and the man ultimately in charge.

Supporters should not have to wonder where Everton sit among their owners’ footballing priorities. Whatever the demands elsewhere, this club requires sustained attention of its own.

Supporters react: relief and renewed uncertainty

Early responses on the Grand Old Team forum reflect both an appetite for change and concern about what comes next.

“Sooner TFG are gone the better,” wrote Liam-EFC, while maccavennie hoped any sale could be completed swiftly.

Others were more cautious. Number_25 expressed mixed feelings: welcoming the prospect of new ownership but questioning why TFG would consider leaving so soon. KevMirallas feared another prolonged spell of uncertainty, while chopper6 called for an owner more involved in the club’s day-to-day affairs.

There was familiar gallows humour, too. HalfTimeSayers summed up the prospect of another ownership saga: “Limbo FC. Spending more on legal fees than strikers for another year then.”
