Now, Simon Phillips has stated that there are some regrets in West London that they used him for this game, especially as he is currently struggling with an ongoing injury concern.

He said: “There is some internal regret of Palmer playing the full game against Luton Town in the League Cup earlier this season, but at that time there wasn’t any real signs of too much pain. I suspect going forward it will be managed better, like they do with Reece James.

“Some decisions might need to be made too about any further treatment such as surgery, although I doubt anything will happen with that whilst the season is on.”

Palmer withdrew from the England squad for the recent Nations League fixtures in order to manage his fitness, much to the annoyance of Thomas Tuchel.

The decision left Palmer gutted, but there was an acceptance between all parties that his injury woes across the last 18 months have left him in a fragile position when it comes to playing too many games.

While he missed the international camp, a number of other England stars played well in similar positions to his. Morgan Rogers made his mark with a goal and glorious assist for Harry Kane.

He faces an uphill battle to convince the former Blues boss that he should be in the squads leading up to the 2028 European Championships, but ultimately he will only be able to achieve this by performing well for his club.

Palmer and Chelsea have prioritised this for now, and are clearly making moves to not put his future for both club and country in danger.
