John Hartson was brave as a lion during his playing days, a no-nonsense centre forward who had great success in the Premier League and with Celtic.

That also includes Hartson representing Wales on 51 occasions, as he is now watching the next crop of Welsh talent coming through via Liverpool.

Hartson has watched Lewis Koumas up close and personal, including his few appearances off the bench in the Premier League this season and stated that he already has ‘no fear’ in his game.

Speaking to Redmen TV, Hartson added that at Koumas’ age, he ‘doubted’ himself, but thinks his fellow countryman is already playing ‘like a real centre forward.’

John Hartson states Lewis Koumas is at the ‘right club’ in Liverpool

Koumas earned his first start as Liverpool knocked Tottenham out of the League Cup in September, and that has continued during this three-week international break.

Craig Bellamy is the man in the Wales dugout, and despite his side’s struggles in the UEFA Nations League, where they lost three out of four matches, it was still a positive trip for Koumas.

The 21-year-old played 85 minutes as Wales beat Erling Haaland’s Norway 2-1, including earning starts against Portugal and Denmark.

All of this is just part of Koumas’ development, as Hartson stated that the Anfield youth product is at the ‘right club’ to develop and go to the next level.

In total, Koumas has earned just over 100 minutes of club football this term, which proves the trust Andoni Iraola has in the player.

Added to the fact that Koumas helped Hull earn promotion to the Premier League last season, scoring three goals for the Tigers, as he joined after January.

That’s why Hartson is rightfully excited by the progress his fellow countryman is making, and with Hugo Ekitike still injured, expect those minutes to continue.

“Lewis has been great; now he’s at Liverpool, he’s at the right club in my eyes to develop and get better,” said Hartson.

“He’s had opportunities already under the new manager. I just like the way he plays. He’s got no fear. You have no fear at 19. I always doubted myself.

“When I got to 29, 30, you are thinking to yourself, ‘Can I still do it?’ At 19, you have plenty of legs, plenty of energy, and nothing frightens you at that age. You aren’t concerned about anything.

“I like the way he plays. He gets his back in as well. He played like a real centre forward the other night (for Wales).”
