David Moyes has shared his immediate reaction following the news to break on Friday about The Friedkin Group putting Everton up for sale.

There is an understanding that the Friedkins are valuing Everton at around £800m as they open the doors to new owners taking over on Merseyside. The news landed just a matter of days before Everton return to Premier League action following the international break.

On Friday afternoon, Moyes faced the media for the first time since the news broke. The 63-year-old has naturally been focused in on Sunday’s game against Hull City but the news of the club being put up for sale was a huge topic of discussion.

David Moyes shares initial reaction to the Friedkins putting Everton up for sale

“Yeah, I was surprised because they’d only come in a year and a half ago, and I think most of us came in a lot longer than that. I think we all were expecting them to be here for the next 20, 30 years, however long it may be. Pretty surprised, but maybe, by the way things sort of worked out over the transfer window, I probably was seeing through it a little bit before that. I think it’s probably for all Evertonians to see now,” said Moyes during his Friday press conference.

“I’m more disappointed for the fans because they’ve been through so many difficult periods. They really have. I think the last thing they really wanted to hear was this.”

“Reading the things that I’ve seen this morning, they’re looking forward to getting the right people in to take the club further forward. It’s a great club. If anybody’s out there who wants to buy it, and if they want to speak to me, I’ll be the first one to talk to them and let them know that it’s certainly worth buying,” Moyes added.

Everton fans have shared their frustration with the Friedkins over on our TalkingPoints app. Although there are some potential positives over the Friedkins moving on, the development has naturally sparked a lot of questions surrounding the Americans’ real motives behind buying the club in 2024.

A lack of investment on players over the summer transfer window will have also been a real indication for many fans on Merseyside. The Friedkins had an opportunity to really propel Everton closer to the European battle but their lack of spending instead left Moyes short in certain areas of his squad.

Moyes previously admitted he’d never spoken to Dan Friedkin since he returned to the club as manager in January, 2025. The 63-year-old’s comments now reflect incredibly poorly on the current owner and the level of ambition he has shown since taking over from Farhad Moshiri.
