With the New York Jets seemingly headed toward a top-10 pick in the next NFL Draft, one draft expert believes they could make a bold trade to move up into the top three for a star from Notre Dame.

While the Jets have been competitive in most of their games so far this season, they still unfortunately have a 1-3 record heading into their Week 5 matchup with a red-hot Cleveland Browns team. After Sunday’s game, only one of their next five would be considered very winnable, and that is the Miami Dolphins in Week 7. There is a real chance New York could be 2-8 heading into the start of the holiday season.

That is why there are already some NFL experts looking ahead to next April, when losing teams in 2026 will get a chance to land a franchise-changing talent in the draft. As it stands right now, the Jets would be outside the top five of next year’s event.

However, in a new early prediction video, NFL Draft expert Todd McShay predicted the Jets would move up to the No. 3 spot in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What they would need to give up was not mentioned, but it would surely include one or two of the three first-round picks they have in 2027.

Who could New York Jets trade up to take in Round 1 of 2027 NFL Draft?

To the surprise of some, Jets QB1 Geno Smith has played well in his reunion with the team that selected him in Round 2 of the 2013 draft. Heading into Week 5, he has an impressive 72.6 completion percentage, 902 passing yards, and five touchdowns to zero interceptions. However, the 13-year veteran who turns 36 this week is not a long-term answer at the position.

For a while, the expectation has been that the Jets were eyeing the 2027 NFL Draft as a year to take one of the signal callers from a deep QB class. So who would New York trade up to select next year? McShay believes Gang Green will trade to the No. 3 spot to select Fighting Irish star CJ Carr.

After redshirting in 2024, Carr won the starting QB job as a freshman last year. The Michigan native played well, but most believe it was aided by getting to hand the ball off to 2026 first-round picks Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.

However, he has taken another nice step forward this year. Through five weeks, he has a 71.0% completion percentage, 1,197 passing yards, a 185.0 passer rating, and 13 TDs to 1 INT for the 5-0 Irish. Carr has been rising on a lot of draft boards over the last month.
