Edwards was keen on taking over, and has the chance at last to work in a multi-club model which he never got at Anfield. This was actually a key part of why he stepped down from FSG over the summer.

The Englishman spent time analysing over 25 clubs to add to their model, including European sides such as Monaco, Getafe and Malaga.

Chelsea meanwhile already have Strasbourg in the BlueCo model, who have recently reached the semi-finals of the Conference League.

They frequently benefit from players on loan from the Blues, with Filip Jorgensen, Omari Kellyman and Dario Essugo available for them this season.

In exchange, Chelsea have consistently added a number of top young talents to their side. Valentin Barco, Mamadou Sarr and Emmanuel Emegha have all made permanent moves to Stamford Bridge.

It has to be said that fans of the Ligue 1 club are not best pleased with being part of the model, however have enjoyed successes in recent years that they likely would never have dreamed of given their situation upon the takeover.

Chelsea are expected to make an approach again for Edwards, despite his previous reservations about hiring Xabi Alonso when he was still at Liverpool.

They will no doubt use the multi-club model, as well as desires to extend it worldwide, as a selling point to try and align the footballing department off the pitch.
