Xabi Alonso returned from his three weeks away from the media with a comprehensive update for us all today.

Injury issues were starting to mound before the break, so everyone was curious to get an update on how the regular starters were getting on with their recovery.

Without getting ahead of ourselves, the news is very good. Asked about Joao Pedro, Reece James and Cole Palmer, who all missed their national team camps, Alonso had green lights all round, and included an update on another player who has been out.

“Yes, they have been able to train,” Alonso confirmed.

“Some of them earlier than others. Marco Palestra as well. So, we have used the time and that was the plan. We knew that against Brentford we were with some players struggling but now they have trained well and they are ready to go.”

We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves – this will be a tough game – but we’re super excited to see a close to full strength team in action, especially after Alonso has had three weeks working with some of them at Cobham.

In other news…

The biggest injury news of the whole presser was on Moises Caicedo, who is finally going to return from a troublesome calf injury.

Pep Chavarria has admitted there’s a big step up to the Premier League – but he’s enjoying every minute of his Chelsea move so far.
