Arsenal's'Invincibles'legacy is suddenly under threat because of Man City's potential punishment

The Invincibles are arguably the most iconic squad in Arsenal’s entire history.

Arsene Wenger’s legendary 2003/04 side went the entire Premier League season unbeaten. They are the only side to have done it in this era. Nobody has managed to match them.

Arsenal fans still hail that incredible side and rightly so. It is probably the biggest achievement in the club’s history, and one many supporters hope will forever be theirs.

However, that title is suddenly at risk now if Manchester City face severe punishment.

How a potential Manchester City punishment could hurt Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ legacy

Manchester City have been found guilty of breaching the Premier League financial rules over a number of their successful years.

The Sky Blues have appealed the verdict and the process is still ongoing, but many people have been discussing their potential punishments already.

Duncan Castles recently claimed that Manchester City could get expelled from the Premier League for their alleged wrongdoings. Other theories include being stripped of the titles they have won over the years.

If the latter is to happen, an argument could be made that City’s results from those seasons should also be altered, meaning their wins and draws could be turned into losses.

Should the decision-makers actually decide to do that, Arsenal would no longer be the only side in Premier League history to have gone an entire season unbeaten.

In the 2018/19 season, Liverpool lost just one game in the entire campaign, and that was to Manchester City at the Etihad. The Reds finished as runners-up back then, just one point behind Pep Guardiola’s champions.

So, Liverpool will not just be recognised as the champions that season, but we’re sure their fans will claim that they are the new Invincibles.

Arsenal will still remain the first side to do it in the Premier League era, but their legacy as the only club to have achieved that feat will be gone.

These are all big ‘ifs’, and there is no guarantee that any of it will happen. However, it will be interesting to see how Arsenal and Liverpool fans will react if it does.
