Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool celebrates with the Champions League Trophy after winning the UEFA Champions League Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool
The best part? It wasn’t just a list of the trophies he put in the cabinet or a ranking of the greatest games, it was a deeper dive into the chaotic, brilliant, and deeply weird moments that made the Klopp era what it was. Here is what the community had to say.
Barcelona and the chaos of Carrow Road
You simply can’t talk about Klopp’s Liverpool without talking about the Champions League. 2019 arguably brought the pinnacle of his time at the club as the Reds marched to their sixth European crown.
On the way there, the 4-0 Anfield destruction of Barcelona remains the absolute peak of pure footballing emotion. 3-0 down from the first leg, nobody but Klopp gave the Reds a hope of turning things around and making the final. 90 minutes later, and a miracle that will truly live forever had been realised.
TalkingPoints user markmarston didn’t even need a full sentence to trigger the goosebumps, dropping just three words: “Corner taken quickly.” If you know, you know.
Long before Anfield, Madrid or the Premier League trophy, though, Klopp was busy building ‘heavy metal football,’ and many of his standout moments came even before his dream team of 2018-22 had been assembled.
One of the best of these unarguably came at Carrow Road in 2016, when Liverpool played out a crazy 5-4 win against Norwich. Nothing summarizes that early, chaotic energy quite like the sight of Klopp running to celebrate with a shirtless Adam Lallana and the rest of the Reds’ squad after Lallana had scored a last-gasp winning goal. The manager’s glasses went flying in the celebrations, leading to a hugely memorable lasting image.
If they hadn’t already, that was the exact moment every supporter realised that this manager wasn’t just a coach here for a paycheck, he was living and breathing every single second of the game right along with us.
Turning the tables on Man United
Perhaps the funniest part of the whole thread was seeing a Manchester United fan wander into the comments. Naturally, things got a bit edgy, with United supporter dale.odonnell initially joking that his favorite Klopp memory was ‘probably when he left.’
But jokes aside, the banter shifted into something you rarely see in football these days: genuine, unfiltered respect, as Dale praised Klopp for going toe-to-toe with ‘cheats’ Manchester City.
You could hardly begrudge United supporters being happy to see the back of Klopp, and the incredible 7-0 win over the Red Devils in March 2023 ranks right up there with some of his best days at Liverpool. That’s before even mentioning the 5-0 at Old Trafford, or the 4-0 win at Anfield in 2022. He did not always beat United, but Klopp certainly handed the old enemy some of the most humiliating days in their history.
And when rival fans are admitting that you’re the best they’ve ever seen, you know you did something right.
A relationship with Liverpool fans which will never die
Remember when rival fans spent years mocking Klopp for making the players hold hands and bow to the Kop after a 2-2 draw against Tony Pulis’ West Brom in 2015? The internet laughed, but the fans in the ground knew exactly what was actually happening.
Having been surprised and frustrated by fans walking out of Anfield during the early part of his reign, Klopp called on them to stay until the end and help them get over the line in matches. With the team surprisingly losing 2-1 to West Brom with the game coming to an end, fans could have left, but they listened to his call, stayed and watched as Divock Origi salvaged a point in the dying stages.
It was not a perfect result, obviously, but Klopp was thankful to the supporters and it marked a fundamental shift in the relationship between manager, team and home crowd which would propel Liverpool to the highest of heights.
Others pointed out some of Klopp’s most memorable moments off the pitch too, from his interruption of Alisson Becker’s first interview with the club, to ‘Adriaaan’ to his plethora of entertaining interviews. Liverpool probably should have won more with one of the greatest managers of the modern era at the helm, but there is a reason why that does not feel to matter all that much.
Klopp gave us a ride we’ll never forget. Eleven years later, the trophies do look great, but it’s these ridiculous, emotional memories that are going to live forever. Jurgen always valued friendships over silverware, and while that frustrated fans at times, it is a legacy that will follow him throughout his life and long after it in Liverpool.
