Haaland and Szoboszlai are long-term friends having spent some time playing at RB Salzburg together.
That added an extra layer to the drama last February, in a game in which the Liverpool midfielder also got on the scoresheet with a stunning free-kick.
Reminded of his tangle with Szoboszlai while previewing Sunday’s match for Viaplay, Haaland was asked what he said to his mate after the game.
“He should not have pulled me down, he should just let me go and score. I think that would be the best,” laughed the 26-year-old.
“I told him just give me the goal. I also told him I was faster than him because you could see that in the game as well. It was a funny situation and in the end a crazy game, and for us an amazing game.”
Notoriously competitive, Szoboszlai is unlikely to let Haaland’s comments go, and will no doubt be determined to prove that he is in fact the faster of the two at Anfield on Sunday. With all the drama and noise already surrounding this game, the private battle of these two players adds another plotline to follow.
