Liverpool are keeping close watch on a talented winger, even though he signed a new contract this week.
The new deal runs until 2031, two years longer than his previous agreement, and raises his release clause from €80m to €100m (£87m).
The player is now one of three in Francesco Farioli’s squad with a €100m clause, along with Spanish forwards Samu and Borja Sainz.
But the Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that Liverpool still rate the player very highly and have kept him on their list of potential targets.
William Gomes, Porto’s 20 year old Brazilian winger played an important part in Porto’s league title win last season, and his start to this campaign explains why the interest has not gone away.
He has two goals and two assists in eight league games, from 465 minutes, so he has been involved in a goal roughly every 116 minutes.
He has taken 17 shots, which works out at more than three per 90 minutes. He has also not picked up a booking.
His average of about 58 minutes per league game suggests Farioli is still managing his workload and that makes his output more notable.
There is a clear reason Liverpool are interested.
Mohamed Salah left in the summer when his contract expired, and the club signed Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz and neither of those players is a natural right winger, while Gomes is.
There is also a familiar route here. Liverpool signed Luis Díaz from Porto in January 2022 for an initial €45m, and he became a key part of the side that won several trophies.
But a deal now looks difficult.
Gomes’s €100m clause is more than double what Liverpool initially paid for Díaz and Liverpool also spent £123million on Barcola only weeks ago.
Porto own 80 per cent of the player’s economic rights, with Sao Paulo holding the rest, so any sale would need to be worth it for both clubs.
The player himself also seems settled. Porto president André Villas-Boas said the agreement came together quickly because it was what Gomes wanted.
Liverpool will not be the only club watching, either.
Newcastle United, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with him over the past year, and Brazilian reports about his renewal also mentioned Newcastle and Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool will get a close look soon.
The two clubs meet in the Champions League in December, so Gomes will have a chance to show Liverpool what he can do in person.
For now, he is committed to Porto.
But with Liverpool still short of a natural option on the right, his name is unlikely to disappear from their list.
