Mikel Arteta spent three and a half years working at Manchester City before leaving to take charge of Arsenal. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the club committed some of the financial breaches that it has since been convicted of.
City continue to maintain their innocence and have appealed the verdict. However, the guilty verdict has raised questions about the club’s financial conduct during the period in which Arteta was part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff.
Arteta’s time at Manchester City
After bringing his playing career to an end in 2016, Arteta was invited by Guardiola to join City as his assistant. The former midfielder accepted the opportunity and worked alongside his fellow Spaniard until the end of 2019, when Arsenal appointed him as their manager.
Arteta therefore spent a significant period at City during the years covered by the financial allegations. Although there is no suggestion in the provided report that he was directly involved in any wrongdoing, his position on the coaching staff has prompted questions about his experience at the club.
Since moving to Arsenal, Arteta has worked to establish the Gunners among the leading teams in English football. His time at City also gave him several years of experience working under Guardiola, which helped shape his coaching career before he took on the challenge of managing Arsenal.

Arteta responds to questions about his conscience
The charges against City have continued to attract attention, particularly because of the potential implications for the club and its history. Arteta’s former role at the Etihad has also brought renewed interest in his time working alongside Guardiola.
The Arsenal manager was asked whether he had a clear conscience about his time at City in light of the recent verdict. As reported by the Daily Mail, Arsenal’s response to the question was “yes”.
The brief answer offers little detail about Arteta’s personal reflections on his former club, but it directly addresses the question put to him.
