Jameis Winston threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the Giants’ 36-24 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, and he still handed the ball to the other team twice. The two interceptions fit a pattern that has shadowed every one of his starts since Jaxson Dart went down for the regular season.
New York is 3-1 and alone atop the NFC East, a record built on a defense that keeps erasing the offense’s mistakes. Winston has been good enough to win and loose enough to scare, and at some point the math on that combination stops working.
The Numbers Behind a Volatile Start
Winston has completed 43 of 78 passes (55.1%) for 479 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions across three starts, a 70.4 passer rating that sits near the bottom of the league among passers with his volume. He has also been sacked nine times for 37 yards, a sign of an offense still hunting for rhythm behind a line missing pieces.

The low point came in a 6-28 Week 2 loss to the Rams, when Winston managed just 111 yards and a 37.7 rating after replacing an injured Dart. His Arizona line read 250 yards, three scores, and a 95.5 rating before the two picks pulled it back toward the pack. In between sat a quieter afternoon against Tennessee, 118 yards and no turnovers in a win the defense decided.

A Defense Doing the Heavy Lifting

Deonte Banks sealed the Arizona win with a 98-yard interception return as time expired and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. The Week 3 win over the Titans told the same story from the other direction, a 12-7 final in which Winston threw for 118 yards and the defense simply refused to let Tennessee past seven points. A defense can only erase so many giveaways, and the Giants have not yet run into the shootout that punishes a single one.
The Front Office Can Live With This, For Now
Winston signed a two-year, $13 million extension in September, cheap insurance behind Dart. With Dart out for the regular season, that insurance is now the starter, and John Harbaugh’s staff has hedged further by acquiring J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings as a possible backup and promoting Jake Haener from the practice squad.

Winston knows the offense is leaving plays on the field. “I’ve got to do a better job of making sure our best players are touching the ball consistently,” he told reporters, pointing to a Malik Nabers target share that has dipped since the quarterback change. “Find him,” Winston said of Nabers. “I think it’s as simple as that.”
The Tax on a Good Problem
Winston deserves credit for steadying a season that cratered the moment Dart went down, and a 3-1 start first in the division is nobody’s crisis. The turnovers are the tax on that stability, and a team leaning this hard on its defense can afford the bill only as long as the defense keeps paying it. Clean up the giveaways and this is a playoff team. Keep donating them, and the record will eventually tell the truth.
