Jordan Henderson makes Chelsea history at 36 years old

Add to Preferred Sources

Jordan Henderson just delivered a timeless performance for Chelsea.

Brought in over the summer following midfield injuries to Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson was initially signed to provide depth and leadership under Xabi Alonso.

But against Bournemouth, he stole the show. He set up a goal and netted one himself inside the first two minutes and 29 seconds, the fastest goal and assist combination in the Premier League since 1998.

He then capped off his masterclass by curling a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner, sealing a 5-1 thrashing and proving he’s still got plenty left in the tank.

Jordan Henderson’s two goals and assist make history

Jordan Henderson just put on an absolute clinic at Stamford Bridge, setting an Opta-verified milestone in Chelsea’s 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth.

At 36 years and 115 days old, he became the oldest player in Chelsea history to notch three goal involvements in a Premier League game with two goals and an assist.

In fact, across the entire league, nobody that old has put up numbers like that in a single match since Cristiano Ronaldo did it against Norwich back in April 2022 at age 37.

36 – Jordan Henderson (36y 115d) is the oldest @ChelseaFC player to be directly involved in 3+ goals in a Premier League match (2 goals, 1 assist), and oldest for any side since Cristiano Ronaldo in April 2022 (37 v Norwich).

On top of his two clinical finishes from three shots, he chipped in with eight defensive contributions, including three clearances to keep things locked down.

The comfortable nature of Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth allowed Xabi Alonso to turn to his bench late on and hand Marco Palestra his debut for the club.

The Blues raced into their quickest ever 2-0 lead through Jordan Henderson and Morgan Rogers, before a Joao Pedro brace and a Henderson free-kick put the icing on a superb display.

Palestra missed the opening part of the season due to injury, after initially making his mark during the club’s pre-season campaign.

What Chelsea sources are saying about Marco Palestra

However, the Italian is now back in contention to start for the Blues following his debut, and has clearly made an impression on both coaches and teammates during the training sessions leading into this game.

Kieran Gill has shared that Chelsea sources have told him that Palestra has been a standout performer recently, stating: “Someone close to the Chelsea team mentioned recently that Marco Palestra had been killing it in training, impressing everyone. He’s now on for his Premier League debut. £47m summer signing from Atalanta.”

Palestra is a wing-back by trade, usually playing on the right but showing during pre-season he has the ability to feature on either side, helped by the fact he is left-footed.

Pedro Neto and Pep Chavarria started in those positions against Bournemouth, and both picked up assists for Pedro in the second half.

It is a nice problem for Alonso to have multiple players in those positions pushing for a start, with Jorrel Hato an unused option on the bench today.

It remains to be seen if the Spaniard fancies rotating a winning side for their next league game away from home against Everton, with Palestra no doubt set to continue to push for his first start for the club.

The first opportunity may have to wait until the EFL Cup returns. Chelsea will return to Merseyside for that game to face Liverpool at Anfield.

Chelsea were relentless in their first game back from the international break, picking up a 5-1 win against Bournemouth that saw them make their own Premier League history.

A 10/10 performance from Jordan Henderson was capped off with two fine goals, while Joao Pedro’s second half brace eased any concerns after Bournemouth pulled a goal back.

Morgan Rogers had earlier made it 2-0, as the Blues continued their superb record of starting games strongly in the Premier League.

Chelsea make Premier League history in 5-1 win vs Bournemouth

After Henderson’s first goal and Rogers had made it two, Chelsea were in a 2-0 lead after just two minutes and 29 seconds.

This is the quickest time in Premier League history that the Blues have gone into that lead that quickly. with the previous record being from 2018.

Eden Hazard and Willian had put Antonio Conte’s side 2-0 up within six minutes away from home against Brighton that day, although that record has now been smashed.

Xabi Alonso’s side are making a name for themselves for scoring early this season. The only game they did not find the net in the first 10 minutes, they didn’t score at all against Brentford.

With an attack featuring Rogers, Pedro and Cole Palmer, Chelsea have an unrivalled front three in the Premier League, who have consistently proven they are hungry to get going right from the first whistle.

They will be looking to do the same again when they are back in action next weekend, taking on Everton.

Jordan Henderson was the surprise star of the show in The Chelsea Chronicle’s player ratings from Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth.

Henderson scored two stunning long-range goals to bookmark an emphatic win for the Blues, who bounced back from three successive games without a win in style.

Joao Pedro also added a brace after Morgan Rogers had originally helped put Chelsea 2-0 up within the first three minutes.

Chelsea player ratings vs Bournemouth

Xabi Alonso will no doubt have been desperate to see his side keep a clean sheet, but ultimately will be delighted with what he saw from his side as a number of key names returned to the side.

Let’s take a look at our player ratings from the 5-1 demolition at Stamford Bridge…

Emi Martinez – 7/10

As Chelsea pushed for their first Premier League clean sheet since January, Emi Martinez was on hand to make a number of fine saves in the first half. However, he was powerless to save Evanilson’s goal.

Josh Acheampong – 7/10

Preferred to Wesley Fofana in the starting XI, Josh Acheampong put in another strong performance which backed up why Alonso has so much faith in him.

Maxence Lacroix – 6/10

A few nervy moments at the heart of the back three, but Maxence Lacroix grew into the game and was crucial in the Blues keeping their composure after conceding in the second half.

Levi Colwill – 7/10

Levi Colwill has been under pressure to deliver a performance in Alonso’s back three system, and he delivered just that at Stamford Bridge against Bournemouth.

Pedro Neto – 7/10

The Portuguese international looks at home in the wing-back position, especially in games where he can influence play in the final third too.

Jordan Henderson – 10/10

Found the net in superb fashion to open the scoring in the opening two minutes, and maybe even one-upped himself with a stunning free-kick. Played like he had a point to prove that he will be more important for Chelsea than just a dressing room presence.

Moises Caicedo – 8/10

Welcome back Moises Caicedo. How we have missed you. Chelsea’s duel-winning midfielder proved just how important to the Blues he is with a trademark performance in the middle of the park.

Pep Chavarria – 8/10

Pep Chavarria continues to be a livewire down the left after forcing his way into the starting side. Continuing to look a very shrewd acquisition for the Blues, picking up his first Premier League assist today too.

Cole Palmer – 8/10

Cole Palmer’s sensational driving run set up Henderson’s goal. A typically creative display on a day where he further committed his future to the Blues.

Morgan Rogers – 8/10

Little bit of fortune about his goal, but Rogers was the main attacking force for the Blues as they continued to ask questions of Bournemouth after their early two strikes.

Joao Pedro – 9/10

Took his time to get into the game, but took hardly any time at all to make his mark in the second half. A well-taken brace put the game beyond doubt for the Blues.

Reece James update emerges as Chelsea captain misses Bournemouth clash

While there was plenty of positive injury news as far as Xabi Alonso was concerned, Reece James was not named in the Chelsea squad to face Bournemouth today.

The international break came at an ideal time for the Blues, who were missing James, Joao Pedro and Moises Caicedo in their last game against Brentford.

Blues fans were delighted to see Caicedo back in midfield following the defensive woes which have plagued their start to the season, with Pedro also making the starting XI.

Reece James fitness update emerges

However, club captain James was not present, with Alonso providing an update on why he is absent today.

He told the club website that the England international picked up an injury yesterday in the final training session before this game.

He said: “Really happy Moi is finally back in the Premier League, he’s a top class player and we were missing him so now we need to help him in his feeling on the pitch and with Joao as well, we’ve used the time in this long international break. Unfortunately Reece picked up a little injury yesterday, let’s see the tests to assess it.”

While the Spaniard gave no update on when he will be back, Chelsea are well aware of how injury-prone James has been in recent years, and how they cannot rush his returns to action.

With no European football, Chelsea have the chance to hand prolonged rests to players who are struggling, so expect it to be a couple of weeks at least before he is back in the squad again.
