San Francisco 49ers Release 4x Pro Bowler Ahead of Week 5 vs. Seahawks 1

The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the best teams in the NFL through the first quarter of the regular season. Sitting with a perfect 4-0 record, it is difficult to name any issues the team has right now. Even with the success of the 53-man roster, there have been some changes to the roster late in the week. Let’s take a closer look at the most recent transaction the San Francisco 49ers made and what it means for the team going forward.

The San Francisco 49ers are moving on from a former four-time Pro Bowler as the NFL transactions list shows they have released veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon from their practice squad on Saturday. As of this writing, there has not been any specific reason reported for this move, but it is a little head-scratching following a similar situation involving Marcus Davenport earlier this week.

Judon played last week for the San Francisco 49ers and recorded one solo tackle before being placed back on the practice squad for Week 5. Judon is a four-time Pro Bowler, but his most recent selection was in the 2022 season. He has played 11 seasons in the NFL and has 72.0 career sacks across 146 games with the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and San Francisco 49ers. However, he has not found a team to consistently be with since leaving the Patriots after the 2023 season.

This move does not happen to relate with the return of Nick Bosa, who is not returning for Week 5’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. After the release of Judon, below are the defensive ends on the roster for the San Francisco 49ers:

Keion White

Ogbo Okoronkwo

Romello Height

Khalid Kareem

Vilami Fehoko Jr. (Practice Squad)

Sam Okuayinonu (Injured Reserve)

Mikail Kamara (Injured Reserve)

Mykel Williams (PUP)

It will be interesting to see what is next for Judon, as he is no longer part of the franchise after just a single game.
