Cole Palmer Pledges Chelsea Future with Contract Extension Until 2034

Cole Palmer has signed a contract extension with Chelsea, keeping the England forward at the club until 2034. Chelsea FC confirmed on Saturday morning that the playmaker had added another year to his current deal, which would have expired in 2033, with improved terms.

Palmer joined from Manchester City in 2023 and has made 91 goal contributions in 138 games for the Blues. He has won the Club World Cup and Conference League in that time, but a persistent groin injury blighted his last campaign, and he missed the World Cup. Palmer has since signed two contract extensions since leaving City, adding two years to his deal in August 2024.

The news came before Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth, in which Palmer provided the assist for Jordan Henderson’s opener after two minutes. It was his third assist of the season, and he was substituted in the 88th minute with the game long gone. Chelsea climbed to fifth in the Premier League table after their emphatic win, bouncing back from a defeat at Brentford before the international break.

Chelsea Continue Their Long-Term Contract Strategy

Palmer’s new deal is the latest in a series of long-term contracts Chelsea has handed out. João Pedro, Pedro Neto, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo have all signed new deals in the last 12 months. Palmer now shares the record for longest deals in the Premier League with Erling Haaland, João Pedro, and Geovany Quenda.

The timing is particularly significant given the fitness issues that blighted Palmer’s last campaign. He started this season strongly, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first seven games in all competitions, and has formed a productive partnership with summer signing Morgan Rogers under Xabi Alonso.

Alonso insisted on Friday that Palmer is still committed to England and just needs to be fully fit. England boss Thomas Tuchel berated Palmer for missing the recent international window, with Chelsea keen to protect their star man. Chelsea will hope the long-term security inspires an already impressive campaign that has flickered between brilliance and defending vulnerabilities.

Saturday’s win against Bournemouth was a prime example of his quality. Palmer drove into the inside-right channel, set up Henderson, and drew a booking from Marcus Tavernier with another intelligent run before faking a strike at the free-kick for Henderson to curl in Chelsea’s fifth. Rogers, his close friend, also found the net, and Alonso’s men are flourishing around the pair.
