There’s always something of a vintage charm to walking down a Victorian-lined San Francisco street, but for the past few days, nostalgia has taken center stage in Pacific Heights.
A major movie shoot for a noir film that takes place in the 1930s has set up shop on Steiner Street along the eastern edge of Alta Plaza Park, with a parade’s worth of classic cars on nearby Jackson Street. When SFGATE visited the set earlier this week, actors in period-appropriate garb milled about while crew members directed the cars into position.
A giant blue CGI screen actually blocked out the view of the park, to allow for some post-production magic. Trucks outfitted with massive tanks were on hand to supply cranes with liquid for a “simulated rain scene,” as described on the posted permits from the Film Commission.

A crew member confirmed that the film in question is titled “Fog City.” It was written and directed by Dan Pritzker, one of the billionaire heirs to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, whose previous project, “Bolden,” was a period piece about a New Orleans jazz musician. According to the film’s online description, “Fog City” takes place during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and features storylines that follow an underground abolitionist, a police inspector, a Dust Bowl transplant, and a socialite who is blackmailing her son. The film stars Cooper Koch (“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”), Angus Imrie (“Emma”), Sarah Bolger (“The Westies”), Carla Gugino (“The Haunting of Hill House”) and Miranda Otto (“Lord of the Rings”). Distribution details are not yet available.

“It’s a privilege to work on a story about San Francisco, a city I love, and to bring together such a great group of actors. I’m excited to work with such a talented cast and crew to tell this story,” Pritzker told Deadline.
In addition to shooting in San Francisco, “Fog City” also filmed abroad in Melbourne, Australia, using locations ranging from the Labassa Mansion to the Melbourne Town Hall, as well as a backlot at Docklands Studios, which stood in for 1930s San Francisco.
Filming in SF is scheduled to wrap on Oct. 10.
