SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Former Notre Dame cornerback and current 16 Sports reporter Isaiah Dunn caught up with former Notre Dame wide receiver and current New York Giants wide receiver Malachi Fields for the latest edition of “That’s How It’s Dunn.”
Fields talked about scoring his first NFL touchdown, how his time at Notre Dame helped prepare him for the league and watching former teammate Micah Gilbert shine.
A surreal first touchdown
Fields said scoring his first NFL touchdown was a surreal moment.
“I kind of blacked out,” Fields said. “I kind of had a celebration planned, but, you know, it happened on like a scramble drill, kind of. So, I wasn’t really expecting it.”
He said he blinked and then celebrated with his teammates.
Notre Dame’s preparation
Fields said Notre Dame’s program helped him transition to the NFL, pointing to its professional approach to workouts and practices.
“Coach Free and those guys over there, Coach Lando, do a great job with their program,” Fields said. “Running it very professional-like, you know, with the lifts and the practice schedule.”
Fields said the program gave players what they needed while still emphasizing taking care of their bodies.
Watching Micah Gilbert blossom
Fields said it’s been rewarding to watch Micah Gilbert’s development and see him show his abilities on a bigger stage.
“Just seeing him blossom like that,” Fields said. “Just knowing what he could do, but seeing it every day in practice when I was there and just seeing it now and letting everybody else see it. It’s awesome.”
