Everything you need to know about Manchester City's charges
Failure to provide accurate financial information (54 original charges): Manchester City faced a block of charges brought by the Premier League for failing to give a true and fair view of the club's financial position between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The independent commission found the club guilty on these counts, primarily focusing on overinflated sponsorship money and commercial deals artificially funded by their Abu Dhabi ownership.
Failure to provide accurate details for player and manager payments (14 original charges): The club was handed these charges for concealing the true compensation paid to key figures during the same nine-year period. It was determined that payments were made through shadow contracts to circumvent strict financial limits.
Failure to comply with UEFA's financial rules (5 original charges): The Premier League brought these specific charges against the club for failing to adhere to UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations from 2013/14 through 2017/18. The verdict reinforced the finding that the club's financial strategies gave them an unfair advantage in European competitions.
Breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (7 original charges): The independent panel found the club guilty of PSR breaches spanning from the 2015/16 to 2017/18 campaigns. This confirmed that the club's inflated revenues enabled massive spending that violated the league's domestic financial guardrails.
Failure to co-operate with Premier League investigations (35 original charges): A portion of the case revolved around charges for failing to assist the investigation between December 2018 and February 2023. The commission ruled against Manchester City on these procedural counts, highlighting their lack of good faith during the lengthy inquiry.
Single unproven charge: While the club were found guilty of 114 infractions across various financial and procedural categories, they were found not guilty of one of the original 115 charges. The Premier League's statement stated that City were cleared of one of four alleged charges relating to City's duties of co-operation and utmost good faith towards the league.
City maintain innocence: City strongly pushed back against the independent commission's findings and have appealed the verdict, with potential sanctions yet to be decided. This appeal process will involve a fresh three-person panel that will review the initial decision rather than rehearing the entire case.
