Eyebrows were raised when Jordan Henderson was signed in the summer. Eyebrows were raised when Henderson was named in the starting line-up on Saturday.

The new Chelsea signing would have gone a long way in making his doubters look silly. After all, 36 is the new 26.

Henderson's impressive debut at former club Brentford was somewhat overshadowed by the result and the second-half capitulation from the Blues. However, with three weeks on the training ground while others were away on international duty, Henderson worked closely behind the scenes with the Chelsea staff and those not representing their countries.

Henderson seamlessly slotting into Chelsea's midfield has not come as a shock to those who work with him every day. Sources close to Chelsea described Henderson to football.london as a 'standard setter' last month. At the time, we hadn't seen the former Liverpool captain on the pitch for the Blues, but those with knowledge of what happens behind closed doors were more than complimentary of the midfielder.

Henderson's performance on Saturday afternoon, in a thumping 5-1 victory against Bournemouth, showcased why Chelsea shifted their transfer strategy in the summer window. Xabi Alonso has been asked about Henderson a few times since signing the veteran midfielder and each time the Blues boss speaks with such admiration.

It was no different after Henderson scored his first two goals for Chelsea - two beauties at that - as well as an assist in the win over the Cherries. Alonso was asked a tongue-in-cheek question as to whether Henderson had been signed purely for his goal-scoring prowess, and replied: "We signed him for everything. If he's able to score two beauties as today, we are more than happy for him.

"But apart from the goals, he's done many, many good things. I think that today was a very complete performance."

It's hard to disagree with Alonso. Henderson was everything Chelsea have long cried out for.

The Blues' inexperience and lack of game intelligence have long let them down. Henderson was there, constantly, to calm everyone down. There were a couple of times when Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, two enormously exciting attacking players, were looking to move the ball forward but Henderson was having none of it. For good reason, too.

‌

Chelsea were cruising at the time, two goals to the good, and Bournemouth looked lost. There was an argument that the hosts should have looked to kill the game off with a third goal at Stamford Bridge, but such reward came with extreme risk. If they committed too many forward, the Cherries were there, ready for the counter-attack - and that was the only time they were ever likely to score at that point in the game.

Henderson was the calming voice to prevent the game becoming manic. Alonso said earlier in the season that he was desperate for his side to play a boring match, as long as they were on the winning side. Controlling a game from start to finish in the Premier League is borderline impossible but with players like Henderson, who time after time present themselves as an option for their teammates, control is available in chunks.

Chelsea had to settle for chunks. There was a time where Bournemouth threatened to get back into the game following Evanilson's scrappy goal. However, the Blues regained control courtesy of the attacking talent they had on the pitch.

‌

It was, for the most part, a mature performance from Chelsea; one where they looked as if they had turned a corner. It's not going to be like that every week, granted, but it's the sort of performance a lot of supporters didn't feel this side were capable of.

For the majority, Chelsea's players stayed calm. There was a time, though, where Pedro Neto was left furious with Moises Caicedo and then Henderson for not playing him through down the right-hand side and expressed his frustration with the pair before the Blues gave possession away. But Neto regained his head and continued a fine performance at right wing-back.

He was one of a host of Chelsea players who produced excellent displays at Stamford Bridge, but Henderson was so clearly the standout. He inspired the win and repaid Alonso's faith in him - not only to start him against Bournemouth, but to sign him in the first place.

Henderson's first goal, in particular, meant a lot to him. He cupped his ears in celebration - perhaps to do with those who had written him off because of his age - and shouted in jubilation repeatedly while his teammates surrounded him.

Sources describe Henderson as an immensely popular figure in the changing room even though he has only been there a matter of months. It's the same when he is off with England on international duty. What he brings to the table behind the scenes is unquestionable but the on-pitch stuff has been questioned.

We need a longer sample size but so far, Henderson has been tremendous on the pitch. It will be interesting to see if Alonso opts with the ex-Liverpool skipper next weekend where he will be berated at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for his ties with the red half of the city. But Henderson will be able to deal with it - he is likely to relish what comes his way.

Chelsea will discover the extent of Reece James' latest injury in the next few days. The Blues captain was unavailable for England selection over the most recent break due to a hamstring issue but was then declared fit by Alonso on Friday afternoon.

‌

Moments before, though, James hurt his knee in Chelsea's final pre-Bournemouth training session. Alonso might not have known anything about it when speaking to the press. Sources have described the problem as 'small' but it is one that we should find out more about in the coming week.

In one way, it's a positive his latest problem has nothing to do with his hamstring, where he has struggled with an incredible amount over recent years, but on another note it is immensely frustrating for James.

Either way, Alonso would have been encouraged with his midfield's display against Bournemouth. Caicedo and Henderson were - without doubt - the Blues' most promising and impressive midfield combination of Alonso's tenure so far. Romeo Lavia came on in the second-half and impressed, also.

‌

Asked specifically about Caicedo and Henderson's partnership, Alonso explained: "Both [players] in terms of qualities are different, in terms of positioning as well. I think that they help each other well and they give presence, they give stability.

"You know that they are going to be the ones that are going to be helping the rest, not just for their qualities because they understand the game.

"They can play in shorter spaces but as well defensively they give good balance. For me, it's fundamental that we get that area strong and for sure with Moises, Hendo played today, it was his second game. Romeo as well, he played good minutes.

"Reece has played there a little bit in some minutes, and [Valentin] Barco, so we need to keep building around that."

‌

Far from perfect from Chelsea but a lot, lot better. When the midfield operates as it did on Saturday afternoon, it makes everyone else's job a hell of a lot easier. It's now about getting that right every week.

With Caicedo available, that will be a whole lot more straightforward.
