The New York Knicks are in an interesting situation with two of their starters in Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart. The duo is eligible to get a contract extension, but have been unable to work out anything with the organization.
New York is set to defend their NBA championship they won in the summer. For now, they have put all contract discussions off.
“As an organization, our entire focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of. As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season," a Knicks spokesperson told ESPN's Shams Charania.
The Knicks are focusing on the season for now, but eventually talks are likely going to ramp back up. There is a way for both to get the contracts they desire without New York going over the second apron.
“Bobby Marks says that scenarios have been presented to the Knicks where Josh Hart and KAT (both CAA) accept contracts that keep the Knicks under the second apron in 2027-28," New York Post's Stefan Bondy wrote.
On Saturday, superstar Jalen Brunson was asked about what he thought would happen with the two players after failing to get an extension. The NBA Finals MVP kept it short, making it clear they were going to act in a professional manner.
“He's going to be professional. Not just him - everybody. Everyone's going to be professional and continue to do their jobs,” Brunson said.
The Knicks are in an interesting spot and at the end of the day they have a championship to go defend. Contract talks may have been frustrating for at least one of the guys, but Brunson made it clear it isn’t going to get in the way.
New York has an opportunity to do something special this season, it is just going to come down to the buy-in from everyone no matter the situation. Brunson is going to do whatever it takes to keep everyone in line.
