Why Erling Haaland could decide to join Arsenal over Real Madrid if he leaves Man City

Erling Haaland joining Arsenal seemed impossible at the start of last season but with Man City having plenty of problems off the field, it’s now not off the table completely.

Haaland is being linked with Arsenal – among others – if City are either relegated or indeed forced into mass player sales following their guilty verdicts of the 115 charges they were facing.

Clearly, City would face a huge exodus of players if they did indeed drop down a division or two, meaning Haaland would be one of the key faces to depart. Arsenal, then, are among the teams waiting in the wings to land the striker, with Barcelona and Real Madrid also keen.

However, while both Madrid and Barcelona offer huge salaries and benefits for Haaland’s career, there is said to be one key reason why Haaland might stay in England.

Erling Haaland could stay in the Premier League to break big record

Erling Haaland’s game is all about goals. If he’s scoring goals, he’s happy, and when he’s happy and scoring, Man City are generally winning games.

The Norwegian has been lethal since arriving at The Etihad and has scored 118 Premier League goals already.

And according to reports discussing a potential move to Arsenal, Haaland’s desire to break Alan Shearer’s all-time record and become the Premier League’s top goalscorer could keep him in England. Shearer holds the record at a whopping 260 but with Haaland still in his mid-20s and averaging over 25 goals a season, he could easily be on Shearer’s heels in five seasons’ time.

Quite whether that is enough to convince Haaland to remain in the Premier League if he is forced to leave City, remains to be seen.

But given he is very much a striker who lives and breathes for goals, then it would be no surprise at all to see Haaland chase down that record.
