Florian Wirtz has been singled out for criticism for his performance in Liverpool's Premier League clash against Manchester City. The midfielder failed to impress as the Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat at Anfield.

Andoni Iraola's men got off to a flyer, as they were at a premium in the opening 30 minutes. However, neither side could find the back of the net before the break.

The hosts started the second half with more intensity, creating three chances inside the opening five minutes after the restart.

There were chances at both ends as the second half progressed, but Liverpool had their momentum checked in the 62nd minute, as Ryan Gravenberch was sent off.

The numerical disadvantage proved costly for the Merseysiders as Erling Haaland opened the scoring three minutes later. Jeremy Doku's deflected effort found Haaland, who unleashed a fierce shot past Alisson Becker.

Shortly after, Doku added a second, curling a right-footed strike into the top corner. Rayan Cherki put the game to bed 12 minutes from time following a beautiful team move that saw all of City's outfield players touch the ball.

Wirtz, who started the game, was largely ineffective, with too many poor touches and passes, and was replaced in the 66th minute.

After the match, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticise the Germany international for his display.

One wrote:

“Bloody hell Wirtz, this is bad, man.”

Another tweeted:

“How a** is Wirtz btw. Every week he looks worse.”

A third remarked:

“Wirtz been a huge standout so far. Standout for one of the worst players.”

“We played two different games” – Iraola on Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City

Iraola assessed his team**’**s performance after losing to table-toppers City.

Speaking after the match, Iraola claimed his players delivered a brilliant performance before Gravenberch’s dismissal and conceded that City were the better side after the red card.

“I think the first part is that we played two different games,” he told BBC Sport. “One until the red card, and then after. For 60 minutes, the players were very good. The second game from the red card was where City were better than us.”

The result marked Liverpool’s first defeat of the campaign. Manchester City, on the other hand, remain unbeaten and are the only Premier League side with a 100 percent record.
