Jurrien Timber says he is ‘happy to be back’ playing at the Emirates Stadium after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury.
The 25-year-old had established himself as an important part of Mikel Arteta’s backline, but ankle and groin problems kept him sidelined for several months last season.
His last home appearance came in the 2-0 win over Everton back in March, when he was withdrawn after just 38 minutes.
Since returning against Sunderland before the international break, Timber has gradually rebuilt his fitness and also started for Xavi’s new-look Netherlands in their meeting with Greece.
However, he now faces increased competition for a starting spot, with Ben White impressing in his absence.
White has continued to develop his telepathic understanding with Bukayo Saka down Arsenal’s right flank, receiving praise for his intelligent positioning and overlapping runs, with two assists in five Premier League appearances this season.
Despite the competition for places, Timber expressed his delight at being back in front of the home supporters after a prolonged absence.
Reflecting on the last few weeks, the Dutch international told beIN Sports: “We ended the last seven games with the Brighton result. It wasn’t great, but I think we came back well from the international break.
“This is a tough game, Leeds are playing really well. They hadn’t lost a game until today, which says a lot about the Premier League, the level at the moment, and the level we need to get to win every game.
“In two days we have an amazing game again in the Champions League in front of our crowd. We’re excited and I’m happy to be back,” he added.
“I haven’t been here in like seven months, playing at home, so just positive vibes in the team. The mood is good and we just need to keep going.”
Timber also reserved praise for Mikel Arteta and the role he has played in his development, following the Arsenal manager’s decision to sign a new contract, extending his stay at the club until 2030.
“It’s great. I don’t even need to explain what he has done with the club. He changed it and he is not planning to stop soon so we will back him.
“I’m happy the club extended his contract. A lot of amazing years to come with him for us and we’re lucky to have him as a coach.”
Timber may make his first start at the Emirates since March on Tuesday evening, when the Gunners welcome French outfit Lille in the Champions League.
