Sunderland reportedly watched Waterford striker Tommy Lonergan as the 22-year-old produced a two-goal display against England U21s.
According to TEAMtalk, the Black Cats were represented at Turner’s Cross as the Republic of Ireland secured a 3-1 victory over Lee Carsley’s side. Leeds United, Everton, Brentford and Brighton were also reported to have had representatives present to assess Lonergan.

The Waterford forward scored either side of Conor McManus’ goal as Ireland came from behind to secure a European Championship play-off place. Lonergan’s form has continued since then. He was on target again as Waterford beat Bohemians 2-0 on Friday to reach the FAI Cup final for the first time in 22 years.
Waterford stated in September that Lonergan had scored 15 times for the club across all competitions in 2026. His latest cup goal has now taken that tally to 16. The striker came through at St Patrick’s Athletic before moving to Fleetwood Town in 2024. He subsequently returned to Ireland with Waterford, initially on loan before completing a permanent move.

His performances have already attracted domestic interest. Waterford reportedly rejected a bid worth around £152,000 from Derry City earlier this year. TEAMtalk claims Championship clubs are also monitoring Lonergan ahead of the January transfer window.
There is no suggestion at this stage that Sunderland have submitted an offer or entered negotiations. Their reported presence in Cork does, however, suggest the striker is among the emerging players being monitored as the club continue to assess potential additions across a wide range of markets.
