Newcastle and Arsenal lock horns in £60m transfer tussle as Everton 'lead contender' to sign top striker

The latest Premier League transfer news as Everton, Arsenal, Newcastle United and more eye January deals

Gameweek 6 of the 2026/27 Premier League has been a cracker so far, with a number of highly entertaining matches taking place over the weekend. Arsenal kicked things off with a 2-1 win over Leeds United, before Chelsea thumped Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge. Man United and Tottenham played out a fiery 1-1 draw, in a game that saw Spurs reduced to ten men late on.

On Sunday, Manchester City managed to shake off the swirling media storm around the club by battering Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, while Crystal Palace came from a goal down to beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Selhurst Park. Meanwhile, Hull City rescued a draw at home to Everton. The gameweek will finish on Monday night, when Coventry City host Newcastle.

Our first story of today’s rumours round-up takes us to Villa Park, where Aston Villa played out a frustrating 2-2 draw with Brentford on Saturday. The result sees Unai Emery’s side lie 15th in the table after six matches. According to Football Insider, the club are now taking a keen interest in Real Madrid forward Endrick, amid fierce competition from AC Milan.

The in-demand wonderkid wasn’t allowed to leave the Bernabeu over the summer, but it appears that his club have now changed their tune. The Brazil international is said to be “firmly” in Villa’s sights as they plot a potential loan move, with the West Midlands club believed to be “among the front-runners” to get a deal done in the window window.

The 3AM Verdict: Nicolas Jackson has made a decent start to his Villa career, scoring three goals in seven games, but beyond the ex-Chelsea striker, there’s little in the way of quality competition for a starting spot. Endrick’s arrival would certainly improve Villa’s attacking options, and it would be great for the neutral to see him test his mettle in the Premier League.

Everton hold ‘strongest’ interest in striker

Over at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton will be in decent spirts after ending the weekend fifth in the league table following their 2-2 draw at Hull City. Reinforcements are desperately needed in January, however, after a dire summer window saw the Toffees finish up with just one recognised senior striker on the books in Thierno Barry.

Team Talk suggest Everton are now leading the race to sign Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul, amid competition from Leeds United. The 26-year-old was called up for the France senior side in the international break and played three times, and has scored four goals in the league for Rennes already this season.

The 3AM Verdict: Everton aren’t a Premier League club who can spent tens of millions of pounds on a striker already proven in England’s top tier, so they need to think outside the box when it comes to their recruitment. Given how deep France’s pool of talent is, a call-up to the senior side proves Lepaul is a quality player, and if Rennes’ asking price is reasonable, Everton could do a lot worse.

Nusa transfer race set to accelerate

Over in Germany, RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa continues to make the headlines, after another scintillating display that saw him score and provide an assist in his side’s 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. According to transfer guru Ekrem Konur, Nusa’s club have now set a tempting £60m asking price for their top talent amid growing trasnfer interest.

The reporter says that Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as Aston Villa are “locked” in a transfer battle for the Norway international. There is no indication, however, of which club is currently winning the race. Nusa shone at the 2026 World Cup with his country, who made it through to the quarter-finals before being eliminated by England.

The 3AM Verdict: At 21 years of age, Nusa really does have the world at his feet. He’s arguably not quite ready to be the final piece of Arsenal’s puzzle - a world-class left winger - but could make a huge impact at Newcastle or Villa. With the latter having Champions League football to offer, they could make a highly convincing case to be chosen.
