Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was pulled away by staff after their 3-0 win over Liverpool. The Italian shot-stopper appeared to engage in a heated war-of-words with a supporter at Anfield in the tunnel area before being led towards the changing rooms.
The incident occurred at full-time after Enzo Maresca's side capitalised on a man advantage to put the hosts to the sword. It was a high-octane Premier League showdown as City played their first match since the independent commission's guilty verdict on their alleged financial breaches.
Footage has emerged on social media of Donnarumma making his way down the tunnel, smiling at the fans remaining, while shouts of 'cheat' can be heard, in relation to the verdict placed on City after their legal battle with the top-flight over 115 alleged breaches.
City's guilty verdict fuelled the anger in Anfield and surrounding the stadium following the news, which emerged during the international break. It has left supporters from around the country feeling aggrieved at the lack of sporting integrity with the Premier League describing the club to have lodged 'sham' contracts.
The financial bloating of deals has been seen to have muddied the waters, giving Maresca and his predecessors between 2009 and 2018 an unfair advantage. This led to Liverpool supporters chanting 'cheats' at the City players and displaying banners insinuating that some of the sporting sanctions could see their rivals stripped of their honours during the nine-year period.
Liverpool fed off their raucous crowd and looked to be having the upper hand against City. However, Ryan Gravenberch's controversial red card handed the visitors the impetus and they took advantage.
Erling Haaland fired home the opener shortly after Liverpool were reduced to 10 men. In the dying embers, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki added gloss to a famous win for the club at Anfield.
