The Cleveland Cavaliers are poised to be one of the most intriguing teams in the Eastern Conference this season. Aside from the fact that they have retained the core that made the trip to the ECF this year, the Cavaliers have upgraded their roster with the addition of Peyton Watson. For all intents and purposes, he seems eager to make an impact.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 119-105 victory against the Orlando Magic to improve to a 1-1 record. While there were many positive takeaways from the game, Peyton Watson’s postgame comments were particularly noteworthy.

As a gifted two-way player, there are several ways in which the 24-year-old can contribute to the Cavaliers’ effort. However, while speaking with the media, Peyton Watson had a clear vision of how he wanted to make an impact in Cleveland. He stated:

“I love it. I have so much fun out there doing those things. I feel like each night presents a unique kind of challenge for me, but I’m willing to take them all on. I think that I’m somebody who can be super elite on that end and change the outcomes of my games with defense. So, I’m taking pride in it. I’m trying to do the best that I can and fit what I do into the scheme and principles that we have here. But it’s going to be really, really good for us. You’ve got the right man for the job.”

Last season, the Cavaliers ranked 15th in the league in defensive rating, posting 114.1. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, with a former DPOY like Evan Mobley and an elite rim protector in Jarrett Allen anchoring the defense, the Cavs’ ceiling should be higher. In this regard, Watson seems eager to raise the bar.

Although Peyton Watson’s performance (6 PTS, 4 REB, 2 STL) against the Magic was relatively underwhelming, the forward’s defensive effort and hustle were quite impressive. When noting how he could be a key perimeter defender moving forward, Cleveland will hope he can follow through on his promises.

Donovan Mitchell Praises Peyton Watson

Peyton Watson was one of the biggest names in the free agent market this summer. After a long period of contract negotiations with his former team, the Denver Nuggets, Watson was eventually traded to the Cavaliers, where he joined an elite squad featuring superstars such as James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley.

Needless to say, Watson’s arrival was viewed favorably by the fan base. However, Donovan Mitchell’s reaction to playing alongside Peyton Watson and his assessment of the forward’s potential should give fans even more reason to be enthusiastic. He stated:

“I think the biggest thing is that he’s a winner. You know what I mean? Just the fact that he’s able to go out there and compete on the defensive end. We all know how athletic he is and what he can do, but you saw what he could do when Joker was out last year. So, he brings that, which is new for us. But also, as I said, his mindset, his IQ, especially on the defensive end. He’s a big addition, especially in the film room. He’s communicating in the huddles, and that’s big for us.”

Last season was a breakout year for Watson, as he averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. In comparison, the forward has started off slow in preseason, posting only 6.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. Regardless, these figures are likely to change soon.

It is clear from Donovan Mitchell’s response that he holds the 24-year-old forward in very high regard. When also considering Mitchell’s aspirations to compete for the title with the Cavs, perceiving his new teammate as a vital cog in the machine before he has even made his debut is a promising sign.

For obvious reasons, Peyton Watson won’t be the offensive focal point for Cleveland. With players like Harden and Mitchell fulfilling that role, Watson may see a marginal dip in scoring production.

Still, given his versatility while playing without the ball, his upside as a connecting piece, and his impact as a defender, there is every reason to believe he could help the Cavaliers revive their status as an elite defensive unit.
