Former Liverpool youth player forced to retire early

Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, with all three goals coming after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off.

Gravenberch received a second yellow card in the 62nd minute for a challenge on Jeremy Doku. Erling Haaland put City ahead in the 65th minute, and Doku added a second three minutes later.

Rayan Cherki made it 3-0 in the 78th minute.

The result sent Enzo Maresca’s side back to the top of the table, just over two weeks after City were found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules.

“I think the first foul of Ryan is never a yellow card, never,” the Liverpool head coach said. Virgil van Dijk said the red card changed the game, especially because Liverpool conceded soon afterwards.

Away from Anfield, former Liverpool Academy player Keelan Williams announced his retirement from football at the age of 22.

He confirmed the decision in an Instagram post on Sunday.

Keelan Williams is the younger brother of Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams. In the post, he wrote:

“After 17 years of football, it’s time for me to accept that my journey on the pitch has to come to an end.”

“Unfortunately, due to my cardiac condition and everything I’ve been through, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to stop playing football.”

“Since the start of 2025 I’ve undergone 2 open-heart surgeries and 2 pacemaker implant surgeries, and unfortunately, my heart has been weakened therefore developed heart failure. The symptoms I’m experiencing on the pitch mean I can no longer play at the level I want to, and for the sake of my health, I have to put football aside.

“I’ve played football for 17 years at all different levels, and it honestly kills me to walk away from something that’s been such a massive part of my life. I’ve played alongside and against some unbelievable players, met friends for life and most importantly made memories I’ll always be grateful for.

“But there’s more to life than kicking a ball, and I have to put my health first. I’ve fought incredibly hard to get back on that pitch, but sometimes you have to listen to your body and accept what’s best for you.

“Maybe one day I’ll return, and I’ll never rule that out. But for now, I have to accept where I’m at and focus on my health and future. Football will always be a part of me no matter what!”

He stayed in Liverpool’s Academy until he was 16, then moved to Burnley in 2020. He made 34 appearances for Burnley’s under-18s in two years.

After leaving Burnley, he signed for Bala Town in January 2024. He captained Wales Under-18s against England in 2021 and won two caps for Wales Under-19s.

Keelan Williams joined Denbigh Town in the summer of 2024. He made 42 appearances and scored six goals for the Cymru North club.

He played four times this season, and his last appearance came at the end of August against Rhyl.

Neco Williams responded to the Instagram post with a heart emoji.
