The New England Patriots walked away from Sunday's 45-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders with plenty to celebrate. Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes, the offense piled up 536 yards, and New England improved to 3-2 with its second consecutive victory.

But one of the most important developments from the afternoon had little to do with the final score. Rookie offensive tackle Caleb Lomu suddenly finds himself facing an opportunity that could shape the Patriots' offensive line for the next several weeks.

Starting left tackle Will Campbell suffered a right knee injury during the first half against Las Vegas and did not return. Lomu, New England's first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, stepped into Campbell's position and helped the Patriots finish their most productive offensive performance of the season.

Now the rookie might be needed for considerably longer.

Caleb Lomu Could Become Patriots' Most Important Rookie

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Campbell is believed to have suffered a knee sprain and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday. The initial expectation is that the injury could force him to miss additional time, although the severity has not been confirmed.

That places Lomu in an interesting position. New England traded up to select the former Utah offensive tackle with the No. 28 overall pick in April. Through the first four weeks, his opportunities had been limited, with most of his work coming as an additional blocker or reserve tackle.

Everything changed Sunday.

Lomu played a career-high 47 offensive snaps after Campbell exited. According to Sports Illustrated's reporting, he allowed just one pressure after entering the game. The rookie also delivered an encouraging response when asked about being unexpectedly pressed into action.

"I was ready to go," Lomu told reporters after the game.

That preparation could prove extremely valuable.

Patriots Have a Bigger Decision Ahead

The Patriots already have dealt with significant injuries along their offensive line. Losing Campbell for an extended period would create another challenge just as Maye and the offense appear to be finding their rhythm.

There is an important distinction, however. Lomu is not being asked to learn an unfamiliar position. He played left tackle at Utah before New England drafted him. Sunday offered his first significant opportunity to demonstrate that those skills can translate against NFL competition.

The Patriots host the New York Jets next Sunday before traveling to Chicago for a Thursday night matchup four days later. That turnaround would make Campbell's availability especially important.

For now, New England can celebrate a convincing victory while waiting for more information about its starting left tackle. But the Raiders game might eventually be remembered for something beyond Maye's five total touchdowns.

It could be the afternoon Caleb Lomu began establishing himself as a major piece of the Patriots' future.
