Tony Cascarino
Bruno Guimaraes scored again as Arsenal defeated Leeds United at the weekend, with Tony Cascarino highlighting the midfielder’s willingness to shoot as a key difference between him and Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
The Brazilian joined Arsenal this season after an impressive spell at Newcastle United, where he established himself as a quality Premier League midfielder. His performances have already demonstrated his ability to make an impact in North London.
Guimaraes has made a strong impression since arriving at the Emirates, contributing goals and offering Arsenal a different dimension in midfield. His willingness to shoot when opportunities arise has attracted particular attention.
Guimaraes brings a different threat to Arsenal
Scoring goals from midfield has not always been a consistent feature of Arsenal’s game, but Guimaraes could help address that weakness. His readiness to attempt shots from promising positions gives the team another attacking option.
While Rice and Odegaard are important contributors to Arsenal’s midfield, Cascarino believes they have sometimes missed opportunities to shoot when in good positions. Guimaraes, by contrast, appears more willing to take responsibility and test the goalkeeper.
The midfielder’s performances have also highlighted the value of adding a player who can contribute directly in front of goal. His confidence and attacking instincts could prove useful as Arsenal pursue their objectives this season.

Cascarino explains Guimaraes’ advantage
Speaking via the Metro, Cascarino explained how Arsenal’s midfielders had previously been reluctant to shoot when opportunities presented themselves.
‘They were passing the buck all the time. Declan Rice would have it, [Myles] Lewis-Skelly would have it, [Martin] Odegaard would have it and they never took the opportunity to shoot. It was really weird because they were in some great positions and didn’t do it.
‘Guimaraes will do that, he’ll shoot from the edge of the box. If it comes to him, he’ll do that.’
Cascarino’s assessment underlines the difference Guimaraes can bring to Arsenal’s attacking play. Rather than repeatedly passing the responsibility to a teammate, the Brazilian is prepared to attempt a shot when the opportunity presents itself.
