Double blow for Mikel Arteta: Two Arsenal stars absent from training ahead of Lille clash

Arsenal have suffered a double injury blow ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with LOSC Lille at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi were absent from the training session today.

Hincapie suffered an ankle injury during the warm-down session after the Premier League win over Leeds United last weekend.

He came on as a late substitute for Riccardo Calafiori at left-back after the Italy international bagged the equaliser in the second half.

The Ecuador international enjoyed a superb loan stint at the Gunners last campaign.

His impressive performances convinced Arsenal to make his move permanent, with the club paying Bayer Leverkusen £34.5 million for his services this summer.

Zubimendi has found regular minutes difficult to come by amid fierce competition for places in midfield.

The Spain international has featured for just 197 minutes across eight games in all competitions this season.

His only start of this season came against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup.

Zubimendi was an unused substitute against Leeds but suffered a knock during the warm-down after the game.

The midfielder could have been in line to start alongside Bruno Guimaraes against Lille if Mikel Arteta had decided to rest Declan Rice.

Arteta could now turn to Mikel Merino, who was in excellent form for Spain during the previous international break.

Arteta could also hand Myles Lewis-Skelly an opportunity at left-back following Hincapie’s injury.

Riccardo Calafiori remains the undisputed first choice in that position, but the Arsenal manager could decide to rotate him with a demanding fixture schedule ahead.
