Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, ending their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
The defeat left Andoni Iraola’s side nine points behind the leaders.
Enzo Maresca’s team arrived on Merseyside after an independent commission found City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges the Premier League brought against them. The club is appealing the verdict.
The first half finished goalless, with Liverpool competing well despite missing Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo through injury. The match turned in the 62nd minute, when Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card for a foul on Jeremy Doku.
Erling Haaland scored in the 65th minute after Alexis Mac Allister blocked a Doku shot and the rebound ran across goal. Doku added a second in the 68th minute and Rayan Cherki made it 3-0 in the 78th, according to Sky Sports.
It was City’s sixth win from six league games and their eighth in a row in all competitions.
The mood inside Anfield was hostile before kick-off. Fans booed City players in reaction to the guilty verdict.
Chants of “You cheating b******s, you know what you are” and “You haven’t won a trophy since 1976” were popular in the build-up.
Others held banners expressing their feeling of being cheated by City’s dominance in England and Europe.
The frustration carried on into full-time. Some supporters aimed their anger directly at City players as they left the pitch.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was caught up in a heated exchange with a home fan as he made his way down the tunnel. The supporter appeared to catch his attention by calling the club cheats, and the Italian came back out to challenge what was said.
Footage shared on social media shows Donnarumma briefly exchanging words with the supporter before City staff pull him away. They then marched him down the tunnel.
City lodged their appeal against the commission’s verdict at 7pm on 1 October. The Premier League has said sanctions will be decided in a separate hearing by the independent commission.
Under league rules, an appeal hearing should be held within 12 weeks of the appeal being lodged. A decision is due within 30 days of the hearing concluding.
City have denied wrongdoing throughout the process.
