A former British and Irish Lions and England international rugby player is convinced that England captain Harry Kane has what it takes to succeed in the NFL.
It’s not often that we chat about the NFL on here, this is a PROPER football website after all, but some quotes from the lovely Ugo Monye caught our interest this week.
Ugo, who had a dazzling career playing Rugby Union and is a self-confessed fanboy of American Football, made some curious comments about England captain and Bayern Munich superstar Harry Kane‘s ability to transfer his football skills to an entirely new sport. It’s something that was discussed after Kane admitted that he was thinking about giving the sport a try when he retires from football.
The comments were made as the NFL brings three fixtures to London.
Kane’s kicking ability could be a weapon in NFL
Speaking on behalf of LiveScore Bet, when Monye was asked if Kane could move to the NFL when he hangs up his boots, Monye responded emphatically.
“Yes, yes, yes. And maybe he was auditioning for it with his penalty against Spain. I mean, if he’s only got to look at someone like Tom Brady and think, I could play for quite a long time.
“I get drafted on and off the pitch for the odd punt, the odd penalty, make quite a lot of cash and there’s levels to money, in finance and sport. And footballers get paid a lot, a lot of money. But I reckon Patrick Mahomes is looking at footballers and going, ‘Is that it?’ There is exponential wealth in NFL,” Monye said.
It makes perfect sense
Monye believes that a career in the NFL after football for Kane would make perfect sense. He thinks that Kane’s skills are transferable and he would definitely bring more English and European eyeballs to the sport, something the NFL is desperate to achieve.
“Would he be snapped up? Of course he would, for a number of reasons. One, because he’s a brilliant sportsman who’s known for kicking and very, very accurate at it. But also, whilst the NFL are trying to crack Europe and England, why wouldn’t you take the England football captain, our national sport, put them into the NFL and see the things grow? It makes perfect sense,” Monye concluded.
There’s talk of London getting an NFL franchise, with a likely home at the Tottenham Stadium. Could Kane return to his home? Don’t bet against it.
