Thunder Open Extension Talks With Cason Wallace a Week Before October 19 Deadline
The Oklahoma City Thunder have started contract extension negotiations with guard Cason Wallace, according to multiple reports surfacing Monday. The two sides have until October 19 to strike a deal. That leaves one week before the 2026-27 season gets underway.
Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that the Thunder and Wallace’s camp have opened talks, and that the starting salary under discussion sits at roughly $25 million. It is the first concrete indication of where Oklahoma City is setting its opening position for a player valued for his defense at both guard spots.
The leverage question is where things get interesting. ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has noted that if Wallace and the Thunder fail to reach an agreement before the deadline, offers from other teams could begin at $30 million per season. That would put a gap of about $5 million a year between the reported starting point of talks and what Wallace might command on the open market.
Neither the team nor Wallace’s representatives have publicly confirmed any figures. The numbers above come from reporting, not official announcements.
For Oklahoma City, the timing matters. The Thunder have built their roster around a young core, and keeping Wallace would mean adding another sizable salary to that group. Letting the deadline pass, however, would open the door for rival front offices to set his price next summer, a scenario Siegel’s reporting suggests could prove more expensive.
Wallace has carved out a role as a defensive-minded guard who can guard multiple positions, which explains the reported interest around the league. Players with that profile rarely reach the market without competition.
Talks will now run against a hard clock. If no agreement is in place by October 19, extension negotiations close and Wallace will play out the 2026-27 season before his next contract is settled.
