Texans get bad David Montgomery news shortly after Marvin Harrison Jr. trade image

The Houston Texans made a big move to acquire Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Arizona Cardinals this season, sending a second-round pick to Arizona to reunite C.J. Stroud with his former Ohio State teammate.

The Houston pass-catching group, with Nico Collins, Harrison, Kayshon Boutte, Dalton Schultz, Xavier Hutchinson, and Jaylin Noel, is a very exciting one for the Texans. However, their running game, which was already questionable, just got a big hit.

Demeco Ryans told reporters Monday morning that, unfortunately, David Montgomery is "week-to-week." ESPN's Adam Schefter shared the update on Montgomery, which makes this Houston offense a lot shakier going forward.

Texans' David Montgomery is 'week-to-week' with groin injury

"Texans HC Demeco Ryans said he considered RB David Montgomery's groin injury to be 'week-to-week,'" Schefter reported Monday.

Unfortunately for the Texans, it appears they've lost a key offensive playmaker during their Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans.

While they got to 1-4 on the season, which was enough justification to trade for Harrison from the Cardinals, the Texans lost their best running back.

Now, Woody Marks takes over as the lead back, with a few options behind him likely to see usage this season for a shaky Texans offense.

For the 2026 Texans, with a defense that's allowing a lot of passing yards this year and not being nearly as shut down as in the year prior, the passing game needs to operate at a high level.

While losing Montgomery stings, the addition of Harrison and the presence of Marks as a backup should help the Texans manage this injury for the time being.

While a "week-to-week" update isn't the kind of news the Texans want to hear on their No. 1 RB, it's a good sign that it's not considered a serious, long-term issue. It seems likely he'll avoid IR.

The Texans might be adding Harrison to this offense, but in the same week they wound up losing Montgomery. He shouldn't miss much time, but it seems that Week 6 won't feature a full-strength offense.
