What Impressed Mike Vrabel Most About Drake Maye’s Decision-Making? 1

The New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel, saw more than a big stat line from Drake Maye in the Patriots’ 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The young quarterback threw four touchdown passes, added a rushing score, and avoided an interception. After a rough 1-2 start, Maye has helped the Patriots string together two wins, giving his coach a much better sign of where the offense is heading.

The numbers were impressive; however, Vrabel’s comments afterward pointed to something more important: Maye looked comfortable making decisions and getting the ball out on time.

Speaking on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Monday, October 12, Vrabel credited Maye’s improved decision-making after the quarterback delivered one of his strongest performances of the season.

“We protected him well. I thought that he was decisive”

The quarterback completed 26 of 34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns against the Raiders. He also scored on the ground, finishing without an interception for the first time in a game this season. Just as importantly, he spread the ball around rather than forcing throws to one preferred target.

That last point matters. Recognizing a likely opening is useful; however, a QB still needs to work through his progressions when the defense takes it away. Maye’s ability to find the available receiver helped the Patriots keep their offense moving against the Raiders.

Vrabel also credited the protection up front. The Patriots gave Maye enough time to operate, allowing him to step into clean pockets and deliver throws without unnecessary pressure. The receivers and tight ends contributed, too, with nine different targets catching passes during the victory.

The turnaround has been noticeable. After opening the season 1-2, the Patriots have won consecutive games, with Maye following a three-touchdown outing against the Buffalo Bills by producing five total touchdowns against Las Vegas.

Still, Vrabel will want the improvement to carry into the next matchup. The Patriots are scheduled to host the New York Jets on October 18, and Sunday’s performance won’t mean much if the offense slips back into its earlier habits.

For now, Maye’s growing decisiveness gives New England a promising sign. Vrabel is not simply celebrating the yardage or touchdowns; he is seeing a quarterback who appears more confident in his reads and more willing to take what the defense gives him.
