Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of £84.6m-rated young Porto winger William Gomes, according to an exciting new transfer claim.

The Reds lost 3-0 to Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday, with head coach Andoni Iraola assessing a disappointing day after the game, with the visitors rightly booed throughout:

“I think the analysis is quite clear. I think we played two different games – one until the red card and one from the red card until the end. I think we were the better team until the red card in the first 62 minutes. And they were better than us, obviously, after the red card and they scored the goals.

“But I think the players deserve credit today because I think they’ve given everything. I think also the supporters have been fantastic today – fantastic before, during, after. I think the atmosphere and the feeling we had until that moment… also it was, I think, our best moment probably when we were having the chances and are positive. Obviously when you lose 3-0 it’s not a lot, but I think it was important.”

While lesser-heralded players like Victor Munoz and Lewis Koumas shone for Liverpool against City, big-money attackers Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola again flattered to deceive, not doing anywhere near enough to affect the game.

There is still a lack of quality and depth in the Reds’ attack, especially on the right wing since Mohamed Salah left, and it looks as though Gomes is a target.

That’s according to A Bola in Portugal [via TEAMtalk], who report that the 20-year-old is being eyed up by Liverpool, who continue to “rate” him and have him ‘highly” on the list of ‘potential targets.”

William Gomes could become a star at Liverpool?

Gomes is such an exciting young talent, as highlighted by the £84.6m that Porto are demanding for his services in his release clause, and Pepe has hailed him, saying:

“William is a friend I have here, both inside and outside the club as well. He’s a kid with incredible potential, he already showed it last season and he’s showing it again this one. I’m sure that if he keeps up this level, with the work, the dedication and, above all, the characteristics and qualities he has, he’ll continue to have a great season, bring us a lot of joy, and break through worldwide.”

The immediate thing that stands out with Gomes is that he is at his best on the right wing, where Munoz is arguably the only natural option Liverpool have there currently, and even he arguably prefer being on the left flank.

The Brazilian has already scored 16 goals in 67 appearances for Porto, showing that he possesses plenty of end product in the final third, and has won two caps for the Under-17s at international level.

Granted, Gomes’ price tag is steep, at a time when Liverpool have spent more than £100m each on Wirtz, Barcola and Alexander Isak, but he could prove to be worth every penny over time, with his best years still well ahead of him.
