Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher’s 2023 comments about ‘cheating’ have resurfaced and quickly done the rounds on social media following Manchester City’s emphatic 3-0 win over the Reds on Sunday afternoon.
Enzo Maresca's side beat the very opponents they had robbed of so many memories in dramatic fashion, kicking off what has now been labelled by those in blue as something of a redemption tour following the guilty verdict on their 115 charges coming to light during the international break.
While the match was finely poised - despite Liverpool being without Alexander Isak, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo - referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to show Ryan Gravenberch a second yellow card in the 62nd minute proved to be a turning point, shifting the balance of power firmly in City’s favour.
Erling Haaland broke the deadlock just three minutes later, before Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki added further gloss to the scoreline. The result leaves the Premier League in an increasingly uncomfortable position, with the very club accused of financial rule breaches continuing their 100 per cent start to the season.

One of the loudest voices calling for the Premier League to take action against Man City has been Carragher, who has never shied away from making his feelings clear. The former Liverpool defender has been vocal in his calls for the Cityzens to face the harshest possible punishments, with expulsion from the top flight and the stripping of titles among the potential consequences.
However, one Man City fan has now unearthed comments made by the Sky Sports pundit in 2023 that appear to cast his stance in a rather different light, with many now accusing him of hypocrisy over the very situation he has been so passionate about.
During an interview reflecting on his own career, which saw him miss out on a Premier League title but enjoy even greater success by lifting the Champions League in 2005, Carragher said (watch the segment below):

The clip has been widely shared on X on Monday evening, with one user remarking: "This is legendary," as another took a more pointed approach: "Such a lying disgusting hypocrite."
A third added that Carragher had been shown up as a 'fraud', while a fourth concluded: "Another example of how stupid this overreaction [to Man City's guilty verdict] is. The front man himself admitting he would cheat."

Carragher was just one of many that felt the weekend's action felt somewhat meaningless until the dark cloud over the current league leaders makes way for clarity.
Many are calling for a decision on their punishment to be announced as soon as possible to avoid any firther damage to the Premier League's reputation and integrity. However, journalist James Benge explained that a decision cannot be made any quicker, as he said:

Man City have appealed to the initial verdict and Premier League regulations state that this process must be concluded within 12 weeks. From 1 October, that would take us to around Christmas, although the process may not need the full 12 weeks to complete.
The panel must then deliver its verdict within 30 days of the final day of the appeal hearing. As such, fans can expect news between January and March, though it could also go to arbitration. There is no official time frame for sanctions, but one would expect that they also come in this period.
